Overview
The focus of the neutron physics and fundamental symmetries PTM will be
narrow. The working assumption is that the meeting will primarily
be a gathering of experts, without a need for extensive introductory
talks. However, there will be time for discussion and questions,
and students, post-docs, and those from other nuclear physics
sub-fields are
encouraged to attend.
Meeting Objectives
- Provide a forum in advance of the Chicago Town Meeting [to be held January 19-21, 2007] to
identify existing and new directions in neutron physics and fundamental
symmetries.
- Place the U.S. plans in the international context.
- Prepare a white paper to serve as a basis for discussion at the
Chicago Town Meeting and beyond. [The white paper prepared by the
neutrino physics community in advance of the 2000 Berkeley
Town Meeting may be found here.]
Working Groups
Three working groups with their respective Convenors and Rapporteurs
have been drawn up.
Group A: Precision Tests of the
Standard Model
Convenors: Bill Marciano, Jeff Nico,
Brad Filippone
Caltech PTM Rapporteur: Bill Marciano
Chicago TM Rapporteur: Jeff Nico
Group B: Weak Probes of the Strong Interaction
Convenors: Geoff Greene and Barry
Holstein
Caltech PTM Rapporteur: Geoff Greene
Chicago TM Rapporteur: Barry Holstein
Group C: Rare and Forbidden Processes
Convenors: Allena Opper and Paul Huffman
Caltech PTM Rapporteur: Allena Opper
Chicago TM Rapporteur: Paul Huffman
Meeting Format
The meeting will be held in Room 107 of the Downs Laboratory.
Various maps of the
Caltech campus may be found
here.
Please note that the Downs Laboratory appears as Building #47 on these
maps.
Please see the
Agenda
for the complete schedule; however, the general structure of the
meeting will be as follows. The meeting will commence on Thursday
with round-table working-group discussions, a rapporteurs' summary
session, and a theory overview talk. On Friday, there will be
discussions intended to highlight present/future opportunities and
other
issues that should be addressed in the white paper and, overall, the
Long-Range Plan.
The general meeting will conclude on Friday at 12pm, with the
Organizing Committee meeting to discuss the writing of the white paper
until 2:30pm.
Abstracts
Participants are encouraged, when registering, to submit a < 1-page
abstract on topics of
potential interest. Any number of abstracts can be submitted, and will
be posted on this web site. However, there is no need for an abstract
to be submitted in order for a program to be considered. At
the discretion of the Convenors, short presentations (a few slides)
during the Round-Table sessions will be solicited.
