KamLAND

at Caltech

KamLAND, the Kamioka Liquid Scintillator Antineutrino Detector, is an experiment to study the properties of antineutrinos emitted by  Japanese nuclear power reactors. The aim is to observe and study "flavor oscillations", whereby neutrinos change their "flavor" from electron-type to muon- or tau-type, and back again. The experiment is located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, and was constructed  by an international team of physicists. The Caltech group is led by Prof. R. D. McKeown.
